Hogwarts Houses and their Histories

Gryffindor
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;

The noble House of Gryffindor was founded by Godric Gryffindor, and its colors are scarlet and gold. Gryffindors are known for their courage, bravery and chivalry, and all these traits show why their mascot is the lion. Godric Gryffindor was also the donator of the Sorting Hat, which is still used in the Sorting Ceremony at the beginning of each year. Gryffindor's ghost is Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington (more commonly known as 'Nearly Headless Nick' after an unfortunate accident at his beheading left him nearly headless.) Gryffindors have won the House Cup four out of six years that Harry Potter has been in school (Years four and five, no winner was specified.)

Gryffindors include:

Hufflepuff
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;

Helga Hufflepuff's House was built to teach anyone who wanted to learn magic - Hufflepuffs are fair, loyal and hard working. Their House colors are yellow and black, and their mascot is the badger. The ghost of Hufflepuff House is known as the Fat Friar. Cedric Diggory, Hogwarts' Triwizard Champion was a member of Hufflepuff.

Hufflepuffs include:

Ravenclaw

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a steady mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;

Rowena Ravenclaw vowed to teach children who were smart and willing to learn. Ravenclaw's House colors are blue and bronze, and their mascot is an eagle. Their ghost is the Grey Lady.

Ravenclaws include:

Slytherin
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means
To achieve their ends.

Salazar Slytherin was the founder of this House, whose house colors are green and silver. Their mascot, the snake, represents the cunning nature Slytherins have (and the fact that Salazar Slytherin was a parselmouth, meaning he could speak to snakes), but another thing that was important to Salazar Slytherin was blood - he only wanted to accept pureblooded wizards to Hogwarts. Slytherins are also selfish and calculating, making them fierce rivals for the Gryffindors, who seem to be the opposite. Salazar Slytherin and Godric Gryffindor were famous friends, until their differences of opinion in education led to Slytherin's departure from Hogwarts. The Bloody Baron is the Slytherin ghost, and is the only one that Peeves, the school's poltergeist, is afraid of.

Slytherins include:
